On September 11th 2001 the Coast Guard coordinated the evacuation of nearly 500,000 people from the area surrounding Ground Zero by creating a volunteer fleet of military, merchant, city, and private vessels / All available boats… all available boats… / It took just 9 hours and moved more people than the Dunkirk evacuation at the start of World War II
