USS LEOPOLD

May 25, 2019 — Comic #212
A dark, moonlit illustration of the destroyer escort USS Leopold (DE 319) charging through rough seas toward a torpedo wake. A quote from the report on her 1944 sinking says that when last seen, the Leopold was putting herself between the submarine and the convoy on a collision course at full speed.

On March 9th, 1944, the Coast Guard-manned destroyer-escort USS LEOPOLD was torpedoed south of Iceland. The ship split in half, killing 171 Coasties and leaving only 28 survivors. She is the Coast Guard’s largest single loss of life in combat, and the first destroyer-escort sunk during the war
