White Hulls

Jun 23, 2018 — Comic #180
A junior Coastie wonders, “I wonder why Coast Guard cutters are white and Navy ships are grey.” The Chief launches into a tale: in 1942, Nimitz challenged Munro to a hull-painting contest and filled his bucket with bleach, so Munro “bleached 16 Coast Guard cutters stark white before Nimitz even finished one aircraft carrier!” Another crew member cuts him off: “That’s enough chiefsplaining, Chief.”

I wonder why Coast Guard cutters are white and Navy ships are grey / It all started back in 1942, when Chester Nimitz challenged Douglas Munro to a hull-painting contest. Now, that sneaky squid filled ol’ Doug’s bucket with bleach instead of paint, but that didn’t stop him! / He bleached 16 Coast Guard cutters stark white before Nimitz even finished one aircraft carrier! / …and so to remind the Navy of their defeat, we color our hulls as glaring white as the head of a bald eagle! / That’s enough chiefsplaining, Chief
