Text notes that most D-Day photographs were taken by the Coast Guard, who drove the landing craft and fought ashore. A Coast Guard photographer on a landing craft at Normandy cheerfully calls out to soldiers charging up the beach, “Hey guys, how about a quick group shot before you go? ...Guys?”

At Normandy on June 6th, 1944, the Coast Guard manned roughly a hundred ships and boats, ranging from landing craft to the operation’s flagship, the USS Bayfield. Not only that, but they saved the lives of over 400 soldiers and sailors stranded on the waves under enemy fire.
