At a uniform board, an officer asks how to tell senior chief insignia from a chief’s. A mustached Chief suggests, “Let’s put a tiny little star over the anchor... and then act smug whenever someone doesn’t notice.”

I knew an E-8 once who insisted we call him “Senior Chief” instead of just Senior, because he didn’t want anyone to forget he held the “Chief” title. No one has ever asked me to keep calling them “Petty Officer.”
