At a qualification board, an officer reads a scenario: “You’re on watch when sparks start to fly from the bridge electronics. The helmsman writhes back and forth, seemingly stuck to the helm. Do you pry him free?” The candidate rolls a twenty-sided die (“click clack”): “I rolled a 20, so...yes?” The board chair sighs, “For the last time, that’s not how an OOD board works.” Another member murmurs, “Natural 20, though.”
